On the night of March 24, 1989, the Exxon Valdez, a supertanker over nine hundred feet in length and charged with carrying crude oil from the end of the Trans-Alaskan Pipeline to the lower forty-eight states ran aground on Blight Reef in the Prince William Sound while carrying over a million barrels of crude oil.
